Sarah Michelle Gellar continues to land some decent roles. Fresh off the announcement that she’ll star in Richard Kelly’s Southland Tales comes news that she’ll star in an adaptation of A Girl’s Guide to Hunting and Fishing for Warner Independent Pictures.
The arthouse film, based on the Melissa Bank book follows a young New York book editor (Gellar) who always has defined herself by the type of man she can get. When she meets and ensnares the affections of an older, very powerful and extremely sophisticated man, she thinks her problems are solved when they’ve only just begun.
The movie, which will likely undergo a title change, is looking to begin shooting in September under the direction of Marc Klein, who also adapted the book for the big screen.
Gellar was most recently in theaters with The Grudge. Aside from Southland Tales she her upcoming projects include Guy Ritchie’s Revolver.

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Sarah Michelle Gellar is set to star in an arthouse film based on the stories from Melissa Bank’s book, “A Girl’s Guide to Hunting and Fishing.”
The story follows a young New York book editor (Gellar) who always has defined herself by the type of man she can get. When she meets and ensnares the affections of an older, very powerful and extremely sophisticated man, she thinks her problems are solved when they’ve only just begun.
The untitled project, set up at Warner Independent Pictures, is eyeing a September start.
“She is really the character,” producer Deborah Del Prete said about Gellar. “She is smart, bright and an intellectual. She really is like a New York girl: well-read, sexy and on top of her game. I also think it’s a role she hasn’t done before, and I think when actors try something new, that’s when you get the best performance.”
Gellar just wrapped Guy Ritchie’s “Revolver” and will shoot Richard Kelly’s “Southland Tales” in the summer. She most recently starred in “The Grudge,” which grossed $110 million domestically.
Also producing are Gigi Pritzker and Darryl Taja. Marc Klein will direct from his own adaptation.

Southland Tales
Richard-Kelly.net has the press release for Sarah’s new movie, Southland Tales, here is a bit of it:
Los Angeles, CA (April 20, 2005) – Cherry Road Films and Darko Entertainment announced today that Dwayne Johnson (aka The Rock) will star opposite Seann William Scott (American Pie, The Dukes of Hazzard) and Sarah Michelle Gellar (The Grudge) in the science-fiction thriller Southland Tales for writer-director Richard Kelly (Donnie Darko). Sean McKittrick will produce under the Darko Entertainment banner he co-founded with Kelly. Cherry Road principals Bo Hyde and Kendall Morgan will produce. Executive producers are Matthew Rhodes and Judd Payne of Persistent Entertainment, Bill Johnson and Jim Seibel of Inferno Distribution, and Oliver Hengst of Academy Film Gmbh.
(…)
Southland Tales is an ensemble piece set in the futuristic landscape of Los Angeles on July 4, 2008, as it stands on the brink of social, economic and environmental disaster. Johnson will star as Boxer Santaros, an action star stricken with amnesia whose life intertwines with Krysta Now (Gellar), an adult film star developing her own reality television project, and David Clark (Scott), a Hermosa Beach police officer who holds the key to a vast conspiracy.
“Dwayne, Seann and Sarah each have an adventurous spirit and I am honored that they have put their faith in me,” said Kelly. “ The film is going to be a strange hybrid of the sensibilities of Andy Warhol and Philip K. Dick. ”

And, a bigger version of this still:
Director Richard Kelly (Donnie Darko) told SCI FI Wire that he’s set to make his sophomore film effort, Southland Tales, which should go into production this spring with Sarah Michelle Gellar and Seann William Scott in the leads. “Without giving too much away it’s a big social satire, but it’s also a black comedy, and it combines elements of science fiction and thrillers and even musicals,” Kelly said in an interview. “So it’s a hybrid.”
Kelly, who scored a cult hit with his big-screen debut, Donnie Darko, added, “When I try to explain [Southland Tales] to people, they kind of go, ‘Whaaat?’ They don’t understand what I’m trying to do. Hopefully when people see it all assembled they’ll get what I’m trying to do. But it’s very hard to explain now. It’s just a big, provocative epic story that’s much more elaborate and complicated, I would say, than Donnie Darko, but in the same spirit of adventurousness, though on a completely different level. I definitely don’t want to repeat myself. I’m done with teen alienation. I’m done with the ’80s. I’m ready to move on to other eras now.”
