‘Southland Tales’ Trailer Presents World’s Greatest Cast in World’s Weirdest Movie

Saturday, September 22nd, 2007

The Tagline: “This is how the world ends: not with a whimper but a bang.”

The Translation: Did we just hallucinate that whole thing?

The Verdict: Mocked mercilessly at Cannes over a year ago, re-cut, and finally picked up for distribution this year, Richard Kelly’s follow-up to Donnie Darko boasts one of the all-time great WTF casts in the history of cinema. Sarah Michelle Gellar, The Rock, and Sean William Scott claim pride of place in this totally whacked-out trailer, but we also get glimpses of Miranda Richardson, Amy Poehler, Mandy Moore, a heavily made-up Wallace Freaking Shawn, the Fug Girls’ patron saint Bai Ling, and Justin Timberlake with a gross scar on his face. We have no idea what this movie is about, but we do know that the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon game just got a hell of a lot easier. Will we actually go see it? Maybe, or maybe we’ll eat some bad oysters and watch our dreams instead.

Horror House

Monday, January 22nd, 2007

The Return opens in London:

“She may have failed miserably to escape the genre, but Sarah Michelle Gellar appears to have picked a more challenging role than Buffy for her latest supernatural horror flick.

The Return is more Hitchcock than Carpenter, but there are supernatural undertones as Gellar’s character, businesswoman Joanna Mills, endures nightmares about a murder.

The dreams lead her to a deserted farmhouse where she discovers the reasons the dark thoughts haunt her.

Her character grew up through a troubled childhood and is left unable to trust anyone in her life, so Gellar gets a chance to develop the role in a film which has been given the thumbs up by American critics.

The film takes inspiration from recent Japanese successes like Ring, which prefer to creep up on you stealthily, before delivering the chilling conclusion.

The Return, Certificate 15, on general release from Friday January 19″

Joshua Rich’s weekend wrap-up: ”The Grudge 2” brings in a crowd on the weekend of Friday the 13th; meanwhile, Robin Williams new movie frightens critics

Gotta give some propers right off the top today: Bravo to everybody in movie land for a super-strong weekend at the box office. Overall grosses of $110 million were up a whopping 25 percent from the same period last year (according to you-know-who), making this the third straight ”up” weekend of the fall. Leading the way was the horror remake sequel The Grudge 2, which scared up $22 mil in its debut. That’s a solid number for sure, though it’s far less than the $39.1 mil its American predecessor grossed two years ago … and (ouch!) well below my $35 mil prediction.

Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Kissing Scene Fools Paparazzi

Saturday, October 28th, 2006

Source: AllHeadLineNews

Los Angeles, CA (AHN) – The joke was on the paparazzi for a change. Sarah Michelle Gellar was recently spotted making-out with “The Rock”- but no worries, it was all just an act.

The adorable actress – who is married to her handsome husband Freddie Prinze, Jr. – caught the paparazzi off guard when she was seen smooching actor Dwayne Johnson on a balcony. However, it was all part of a movie scene the pair were shooting.

The former “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” star and Dwayne were working on a sex scene for their upcoming movie “Southland Tales” in a hotel room when the director decided to take the passion outside to the balcony.

A number of paparazzi were anxiously waiting to capture a snapshot of the blonde star but were surprised to see the two actors suddenly exchanging saliva instead.

Even though she was having some fun and laughing at the people below, Sarah Michelle admits she was a bit concerned they would get the wrong impression.

According to StarPulse.com, she said, “Dwayne and I were giggling the whole time. I was wearing this black negligee with Marabou heels, and they decided to move the scene out onto the balcony so they could see the water behind us. And of course there were paparazzi outside. So we closed our eyes and went for it.”

Blonde Looks Helped Sarah Michelle Gellar Get Into Prostitute Role

Los Angeles, CA (BANG) – It’s hard to imagine cute Sarah Michelle Gellar looking like a prostitute, but once she looked the part, she was ready to act the part and be transformed into a woman on the streets.

The former “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” star plays a working girl in the new movie “Southland Tales” alongside Justin Timberlake and former wrestler The Rock.

Gellar, 29, insists her sexy blonde look made her ideal for the role.

She told Glamour magazine, “When you look at me, you think, ‘I know – porn star!’ It’s sort of like a calling.”

Gellar attracted a legion of male fans playing Buffy, and sent pulses racing with her tight costumes. However, the actress refused to bare her breasts in “Southland Tales,” despite her illicit role.

She revealed, “My trainer said to me, ‘So we’ve got to start getting you in shape for this topless scene.’ And I was like, ‘I’m sorry, what?’ And he said he had read somewhere that I had said I really wanted to take my top off in a movie. But I immediately said to him, ‘To know me is to know that’s not true.’”

For her, The Return is more than a mere grudge

October 20, 2006 – Sarah Michelle Gellar is no stranger to the strange. Seven seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and two rounds of the The Grudge will attest to that. She says she loves to freak people out. What’s more, she says, “I love to be scared.”

When it came time to select her next project, Gellar wanted to stick with the supernatural thriller genre, but it had to be different. Really different. It had to have a certain something about her character that would set moviegoers on edge. So she accepted director Asif Kapadia’s The Return, and with it, the challenge of playing a masochist.

“She’s a cutter,” says Gellar of her character Joanna Mills. “She does violent things to her body, and that’s sort of an interesting concept all in itself.”

Joanna is a Midwestern saleswoman who becomes so dulled by her home and work life that she develops a yearning to feel anything, be it pain or pleasure.

“The idea is that you cut yourself because you feel so cut off from everything that you want to be able to feel something,” Gellar explains. “First comes pain, and you’ve wanted so long to feel that pain. But then there’s a euphoria that comes from that, the endorphins, the blood. Just the whole concept of it. It’s such a pleasure-pain principle.”

A contributing factor in Joanna’s psychological deterioration is her recent lucid dreams; dreams so disturbing, she begins to wonder if they could in fact be someone else’s. She believes she might be living a parallel life with someone else, and that someone else might be dead. This vexatious facet drew Gellar’s interest.

“One of the things that I think [Asif and I] were both fascinated with is sort of the underlying Buddhist themes of life, which is life is cyclical,” says Gellar. “You come and you live your life. Then you come back and you fix things from the past. And about how you need to finish what is supposed to be your life before you can really, truly sort of transcend to what is essentially the next life.”
