As the star of Ringer, Sarah Michelle Gellar‘s workday often involves long hours on the set, but don’t bother explaining that to her daughter Charlotte Grace, who thinks mom’s career is far more glamorous.

“She totally knows what my job is. My job is to get my hair and makeup done,” the actress tells PEOPLE of her 2-year-old, who frequently visits her while she films the show.

“[She thinks my job is] to go in the hair and makeup trailer.”

While the little one is not allowed to watch scenes from the decidedly adult drama, Charlotte has found a home base on set, often joining costar Ioan Gruffudd‘s daughter Ella on playdates.

“Pottery Barn actually came to our set and did a playroom for all of the kids,” says Gellar, 34. “We have a place where they can come and be a part of it, so [the parents are] not missing out.”

Her fondness for the brand is also what led the actress to partner with them for an Operation Shower event on Wednesday in L.A. The baby shower, which was sponsored by Carousel Designs, provided 40 military spouses and moms-to-be with the necessary products expectant mothers need.

“I was telling my daughter before I left today — I said, ‘Mommy is going to go to a baby shower for people who don’t have other family here and don’t have everything they need,’” Geller explains. “She said, ‘I want to give them something!’ It’s just so cute for her to understand what I was doing; it was important to me. She wanted to donate a stuffed animal.”

Though she’s been able to seamlessly juggle such events, shooting and spending time with her daughter up until this point, Gellar calls finding the balance an ongoing challenge.

“It’s a learning curve, it’s definitely a learning process,” she says. “My hat goes off to anyone that juggles all of it because it’s very hard. You always feel like there’s a part of you that’s not giving enough to one, whether it’s work or your family or your charitable donations.”

Freddie Prinze Jr. is getting plenty of daddy-daughter time now that wife Sarah Michelle Gellar is busy shooting The CW’s Ringer.

“He loves it. We fight over who gets to stay home,” Gellar told Us Weekly Wednesday of her stay-at-home husband. “You’d think it would be the opposite, that the parents would be like, ‘No, I’ll go to work!’ but he’s like, ‘You stayed home for two years! It’s my turn!’”

“He and Charlotte have too much fun,” added Gellar, who was lending her support to military moms through Operation Shower with Pottery Barn Kids in Pacific Palisades, Calif. “I’m jealous!”

The 34-year-old actress admitted that it can “be really difficult” balancing her career with motherhood. “It’s hard to see Charlotte’s little face when you say you have to go to work. It’s sad!” Gellar, who gave birth in September 2009, told Us. “But you make time for everything. You work it out.”

Wednesday’s event gave Gellar an opportunity to meet expectant wives of military men who may be deployed or are about to be deployed; Pottery Barn Kids surprised each of the attendees with brand new cribs and Carousel Designs supplied them with bedding.

“You stand next to these women and you realize how much they have to sacrifice,” Gellar realized. “It’s hard enough to have your partner, your spouse, go to work every day, but can you imagine? They don’t know if they’ll even come home or what condition they’ll be in. And they’re sacrificing all this for us.”

Gellar said her little girl was inspired to help out, too. “She wanted to donate this morning! I explained what I was doing and she said, ‘I’m going to give them a stuffed animal!’” the actress told Us. “For a two-and-a-half-year-old to give up a stuffed animal, that is a big deal!”

Sarah Michelle Gellar was on hand at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, CA, this morning for Operation Shower. The actress played host at the event, which honored military moms whose husbands are currently deployed, and capped things off by giving each woman in attendance a new crib. The free furniture came from Pottery Barn Kids, the organization SMG was representing in her role today. We had a chance to chat with the Ringer star and mom during the festivities. Sarah Michelle told us it was the second baby shower she’s thrown this week, having also hosted a soiree for her best friend, who joined her for today’s celebration.

Many of the women in attendance today were expecting, and we asked Sarah Michelle if her 2-year-old daughter with Freddie Prinze Jr., Charlotte, has been asking for a little brother or sister lately. She told us her toddler is actually much more focused on bringing home a kitten than a new baby! Unfortunately, SMG told us she’s allergic to cats but says a pet could still likely be the next addition to their family of three. Stay tuned to catch our full interview with her in today’s PopSugar Rush!

Now that The CW has officially given Sarah Michelle Gellar’s star vehicle, Ringer, a full season, The Hollywood Reporter has some fresh spoilers.

Aside from discussing last episode’s bloody end, creator and executive producer Eric Charmelo and executive producer Pam Veasey revealed several spoilers about this season’s guest stars and mysteries.

Here are ten things you can expect from Season 1.

1. Veronica Mars alum Jason Dohring appears on Tuesday’s episode. “He’s going to play Juliet’s [Zoey Dutch] public school teacher who she sees as an ally,” Charmelo says.

2. Bridget, Siobhan and baby makes three. If you’ve been wondering about whether there will be some solution to the fact that Siobhan is pregnant and Bridget is faking it, the EPs say Season 1 will span the nine months at least. And the pregnancy is reaching two months at this point in the series. “[Bridget] doesn’t have that much time left before she has to come up with a plan,” Charmelo says. “You know the options are get pregnant, fake a miscarriage, or get pregnant if she’s not already pregnant. She was a stripper…”

3. Siobhan will return from France sooner than later. “She’ll realize she’ll need to move around in order for things to work out the way that she wants them to. Being sedentary is not in the cards for her,” says Charmelo.

4. Siobhan’s motive revealed. We still don’t know much about why Siobhan pulled the disappearing act, but Veasey reveals, “She has always been the one driven by revenge, so keep that in mind and Bridget by redemption. So, revenge has to rear its beautiful head at some point in grander ways and then others.”

5. How will guest star Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s Amber Benson fit into the story? “She is a stripper that was a co-worker of Bridget’s when she was stripping at Club Caged in Rock Springs, Wyoming,” Charmelo reveals. “And she’s seen better days. I guess that’s all I can say about her character.”

6. The loft project will be no more. Now that Gemma (Tara Summers) is gone, Charmelo says, “Ideally I think Bridget wants to get rid of the loft, lots of bad memories anchored to that. So, I think they’ll probably put it up for sale at some point.”

7. We’ll find out who Siobhan’s partner in crime is. Veasey says we’ll learn the identity of the person on the phone “soon, sooner than we thought, soon… it happens very quickly. Siobhan’s world starts to expand. So, we get a lot more answers quickly.”

8. We’ll meet the twins’ parents. The only problem is they’re dead. Charmelo says we’ll possibly meet them in flashback.

9. Make way for Andrew’s (Ioan Gruffudd) ex-wife and Juliet’s mom. Charmelo says she plays “A big role… that will probably come ten or eleven episodes in I think, but she will be a force of nature when she’s introduced.”

10. Speaking of Andrew’s connections… We’ll meet the person he was speaking to on the phone on the pilot episode and find out what they’re planning. “You’ll see the other side,” Charmelo says. “And you’ll see all of that play out.”

Ringer viewers didn’t have to wait long for Bridget’s secret to come tumbling out.

After Gemma (Tara Summers) discovered that Henry (Kristopher Polaha) had actually been having an affair with Siobhan (Sarah Michelle Gellar), Bridget did the only thing she could think of to keep herself safe: Play the twin card.

“It was a bold move on Bridget’s part,” creator Eric Charmelo says, noting that it was more exciting that Bridget, who’s been harboring this secret for around two weeks now, was the one to out herself. “It was partial desperation, partial plea to try to find an ally in this crazy world.”

In revealing her secret to Gemma, Bridget will now have to do damage control in Tuesday’s episode (9/8c on The CW), when she discovers whether Gemma will be an ally or an adversary, Charmelo says. “Just because the secret’s out to one person, doesn’t mean it’s out to the collective. So the drive in the episode is to try and contain the oil spill, if you will.”

Like Bridget’s need to finally tell the truth, the producers felt it was high time to show their hand. “We needed to have some drama that she could share with someone and up the stakes for Bridget,” executive producer Pam Veasey says. “She can’t live this life and make this choice and everything just lives smooth. People would go, ‘Right.’ You have to have some jeopardy for her.”

Siobhan’s secret — that she’s still alive — won’t come out as quickly, though she and Bridget will cross paths “sooner than later,” Veasey adds.

For now, Siobhan is working out her revenge from Paris, though we may see her closer to home soon. “She’ll realize she needs to move around in order for things to work out the way she wants them to,” Charmelo says. “Being sedentary is not in the cards for her.”

“You will see more of Siobhan,” Veasey adds. “She’s always been the one driven by revenge, so keep that in mind, and Bridget, by redemption. Revenge has to rear its beautiful head at some point in grander ways. She’s not always just our punctuation in every episode.”

A piece of the puzzle as to why Siobhan is hellbent on revenge was revealed in the pilot through a photo of a young boy named Sean. But we won’t learn the back story as to why that would cause Siobhan to fake her death until the second half of the season, which has yet to be picked up by The CW. The producers are hopeful though. “It’s certainly part of the sisters’ history and what drove a gigantic wedge between them,” Charmelo says.

One person who won’t discover he’s sharing his bed with his wife’s twin sister is Andrew (Ioan Gruffudd). “It’s intentional,” Charmelo says of not having the pair show physical affection toward one another. “We’re going to build up their relationship.”

Ringer airs Tuesdays at 9/8c on The CW.

Sarah is featured on the cover of October’s issue of Health magazine. If anyone can get full scans, it’d be awesome.

Sarah Michelle Gellar on Insecurity, Kate Middleton, and Getting Inspired

The CW star dishes to Health about feeling insecure, her thoughts on Kate and Pippa Middleton, and the secret to her marriage to Freddie Prinze, Jr., in the October 2011 issue, hitting newsstands September 23.

On female insecurity:
“I totally have body dysmorphic disorder. I think most women do…I just have to remember that I’m human, and I’m a mom. Being a parent changes the vanity at least a little bit.”

On the fascination over Kate Middleton’s weight:
“It seems like people are worried that she’s stressed. I feel like 10 years ago, it would have been like, ‘Oh, she looks incredible.’ Whereas you look at her sister, who has such a fabulously athletic body…and I think there’s this movement now, where more women, finally, want to look like that.”

On using a photo of a famous woman’s body for inspiration:
“I would never do that to myself, especially because I’m aware of the airbrushing and trainers and food programs. You have to use yourself as inspiration.”

On keeping fit during pregnancy:
“Well, I went into labor at the Pilates gym. I was getting cranky…it turned out I was in labor, I didn’t realize.”

On growing up in New York City:
“I think, automatically, you look at the world differently if you’re from a big city. You’re never bored, you don’t stay home, you’re always on your feet. I think it generates type A personalities.”

On her successful marriage of nine years to Freddie Prinze, Jr.:
“We communicate. That’s my secret. It’s not a secret, but it’s how I handle all my good relationships, whether they’re male-female [or not]. If you bottle things up, it explodes on you.”

On how she avoids getting too stressed out:
“I’m not saving the world. I have to remember that I like my job, but it’s work, and it’s not my life. My life is my family. And I think that’s the best thing.”

The former ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ star, back at work after taking time off to have her first child, juggles dual roles in her new CW series, ‘Ringer.’

What happens after you save the world?

That’s not a quandary most actresses face. But if you are Sarah Michelle Gellar, it’s a real question. Having stepped into the lead role of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” as a teenager, she found herself a cult icon by the time the series ended in 2003. The show’s influence lingered, with academics writing papers about its slang, its mythology, even its military strategies.

Gellar seemed unable to shake Buffy’s wise and wisecracking shadow for many years, flitting through a series of indie films and horror movies. When she took time off to have a baby with husband Freddie Prinze Jr. in 2009, fans began to wonder if she’d ever return.

And yet here she is, a petite 34-year-old woman dressed in a silky brown jumpsuit with a plunging neckline. She’s sitting in her trailer on the set of her new series, “Ringer,” which premieres Tuesday on the CW. It’s a long way from the Hellmouth.

Not only is Gellar co-executive producing this upscale thriller, she’s also playing the two central roles: Bridget, an ex-stripper on the run after witnessing a murder, and Siobahn, Bridget’s socialite twin sister, who is in so much trouble she’s prepared to fake her own death and let Siobahn step into her own shoes. “The joke is that I’m playing five characters,” Gellar explains. “I play Siobahn and Bridget present day, both women in flashback, and then ‘Shivette,’ which is when Bridget is pretending to be Siobahn.”

None of which quite squares with Gellar’s professed desire to make her life more manageable.

“Playing twins — you don’t think I took the easy route?” she asks sarcastically. Gellar says that producing her own show was crucial, allowing her to have control over as many elements of her life as possible. She takes naps during her lunch break so she can get up early with 1-year old Charlotte, and she gleefully proclaims that Pottery Barn is designing an on-set nursery for cast and crew, because a child-friendly workplace matters to her.

“My family comes first, and you have to be in charge to be able to protect that. You have to be the one who says no or you don’t have a life, which is what I found out the first time,” she says, pulling off Siobahn’s high heels and curling her feet under her.

“She’s very savvy about a lot of things, let’s be clear,” says “Ringer” showrunner Pam Veasey, who also produces “CSI: NY.” “We’re of the same rhythm; we understand how to solve problems. She’s very smart about what we accomplish in a day.”

Gellar has surrounded herself with familiar faces from her “Buffy” years (caterers, costume, hair and makeup people) as well as Veasey and series creators Nicole Snyder and Eric Charmelo, who understand the demands of parenthood. “Our kids are all the same age. It’s a big support system I never had before.”

She says she joined a mommy group after her daughter was born and was the last woman to return to work. “I was trying to be supportive of everyone else, and I thought I was doing a good job — and then I went back to work and realized how hard it was! I literally wrote them all apologies saying, ‘Oh, my God, I didn’t realize!’” she squeals.

“I don’t want to feel like a failure to my daughter. She’s the best thing I’ve ever done. Buffy — pretty great and all, but Charlotte’s way better.”

Joss Whedon, the creator of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” says Gellar was always extremely ambitious and focused. “She was such a precision instrument. The control she applied to every syllable was incredible,” he says. “The downside to control is trying to get energy out of her. She used to say, ‘I can cry any time, but don’t ask me to laugh.’” Whedon says one of her nicknames on the set was “Jimmy Stewart” because “she suffered so well — you could turn the screws and the audience went with her.”

She was, even at 19, “the oldest pro I knew,” Whedon says.

Acting since age 4, Gellar had already been a regular on “All My Children” when she landed the role of a stake-wielding teen savior. She doesn’t regret having spent her youth memorizing lines, though; when asked to imagine an alter ego who didn’t go into showbiz, she says seriously, “I feel badly for the self that didn’t do it. I wouldn’t have had my private school education, I wouldn’t have traveled, I wouldn’t have spent as much time with my mother because she would have had to work.”

Now she is a working mom, playing two very adult characters in a series rather more grown-up than the usual teen-friendly CW fare like “Vampire Diaries.” (“Ringer” was originally created for sister network CBS.) CW President Mark Pedowitz would be delighted to pull in a slightly older demographic, saying at a recent TV Critics press tour, “It will be terrific if others get to sample what the CW has to offer thanks to ‘Ringer.’”

Gellar compares her new series to “Damages,” with complex flashbacks woven into a noirish narrative packed with murder plots, disappearances and love triangles. There’s also a strong ensemble cast that includes Nestor Carbonell (“Lost”), Kristoffer Polaha (“Life Unexpected”) and Ioan Gruffudd (“Fantastic Four”). She knows there are inherent dangers for a nonprocedural drama that dangles clues — especially after the intense reaction to the ending of “Lost” and recent season finale of “The Killing” — and promises that “Ringer” will satisfy.

“I loved ‘Lost,’ but I felt it just got deeper and deeper and we never get anything out of it,” she says. “Nicole and Eric pitched me the first three seasons all the way through. Some things have already changed, but the big questions we have answers to, and we give them out a little bit every episode.”

So what lessons has she brought to “Ringer” from her three decades in the business and seven seasons of prime-time slaying? Gellar doesn’t have to think hard before answering.

“We’re not shooting at night. No graveyards. I’m telling you, you learn these things.”

In ‘The Help,’ Southern society girl Hilly Holbrook (Bryce Dallas Howard) is as polished and polite as possible, but that pretty smile hides a mean, racist streak as wide as the Mississippi. It just proves, as Hamlet once said, “One may smile and smile and be a villain.” Here’s our collection of female characters who tried to put a pleasant face on evil as they schemed, bullied and even committed murder to get what they wanted.

14. Kathryn Merteuil (Sarah Michelle Gellar) in ‘Cruel Intentions’

TV’s ‘Gossip Girl’s have nothing on scheming society girl Kathryn, who thrives on manipulation and seduction, and shows no remorse — even when her schemes end in someone’s death. She maintains the illusion of being a perfect role model, until the film’s end, when the crucifix she habitually wears is revealed to contain a vial of cocaine.

Sarah Michelle Gellar chatted with JustJared.com at Comic-Con 2011, held earlier in the month in San Diego, Calif.

Here’s what the 34-year-old actress had to share about her new TV show, Ringer:

JJ: What do you think will surprise people the most with Ringer?

SMG: Hopefully the storylines, hopefully the twists and turns, we’ll keep them on their toes! Just when you think you know where it’s going, it diverts into a totally different area.

JJ: You are known for such an iconic role – how does that change your performance when you are playing a new character? How do you take on that challenge?

SMG: I think that none of us would be here without the fans, and I know specifically for my show, we were a midseason replacement on the WB based on a failed movie. I mean, let’s be honest, our odds weren’t very good. It was the fans fighting for us, and talking about us and keeping us present that made people tune into the show and those are the people that you want to honor – those are the TV fans. It’s why you do it. I don’t make a television show for awards, you make it so that people will enjoy watching it. To me, you honor that in what you choose, I think you pick characters, not in a similar vain but that do appeal to the same audience. I say it’s sort of a cross between Buffy and Cruel Intentions, a good combo.

JJ: Talk to us about taking on two roles for Ringer.

SMG: Everyone has their own process. To me acting is acting – I pretend to be whomever, it’s just like the ultimate dress up.

JJ: What’s been your favorite part of the show?

SMG: My favorite part so far has just been being with these people and having sort of an adult experience on set where we all look forward to being together and we go home. We all talk about our children and it’s the next part of life for me.

JJ: What is on your bucket list?

SMG: Bucket list? I would like to have a really long vacation.

JJ: You did! And now you’re back!

SMG: Ohh [laughs] yeah, oh right, oops. I want to go to the Maldives! That’s not the answer you wanted, I know that, but that’s really what I would like. I would like to go to the Seychelles and the Maldives. That’s on my bucket list [laughs].

One of the most highly anticipated new shows of the fall is Ringer, which signals Sarah Michelle Gellar’s return to primetime television in the dual roles of identical twin sisters, each with secrets. When one takes over the other’s life, things get even more complicated.

The premise of the new CW drama

In the new drama, Gellar plays estranged twin sisters, Bridget and Siobhan. When, after reconnecting, Bridget believes Siobhan to be dead, she takes over her sister’s life because she’s on the run. Meanwhile, Siobhan had her own secrets, and Bridget’s going to discover that taking over her identical twin sister’s life may not have been a good idea and may, in fact, make things worse for her.

According to E! Online, “producers are looking for someone to play a housekeeper who knows something is up with the switcherooed twins.” It seemed that it was only a matter of time before someone on Ringer would grow suspicious. It’s not like Bridget and Siobhan were super close before (in fact, no one knew Siobhan has a twin sister, which is why Bridget can take over her life), so there’s bound to be more than a couple of slip-ups on Bridget’s part in her sister’s family. But with all the secrets on this show, what will someone becoming suspicious mean for Bridget’s safety?
